We all know Christmas time is a time of giving. A time we focus on our spouse on kids. During this time of the year, we often lack to think about ourselves, the adults. So to bring out festivities within our younger self, The OC Brewhoho was the event that was about to do just that. For four joyous hours, we got to give a little to ourselves. We took pictures with Santa, smoke cigars until our lungs hurt, and dance like nobody’s watching. And during that time, we got to drink unlimited adult bevies like beer and cider while enjoy listening to 80s music from the local cover bands.
So what’s new at the Brewhoho this year? Well, first of all, it seems like the they’ve kept what works and updated what didn’t.
Of course, they’ve kept the intimate venue. With the exception of the clusterfuck parking, the Phoenix Club works incredibly well for the locals. Not having to drive to the middle BFE with no cell reception is always a plus. During the lines here, I’ve not waited for more than a minute for any beer. (With the exception of Darkstar November from Bottle Logic’s 1 pm release)
They’ve changed the glasses to these cute mugs (pictured here). On the backside of the red mugs is states “Naughty” while the green mugs states “Nice”. According to OC Brewhaha’s instagram, there is also a blue version for the designated driver which I’ve yet to see in person.
They’ve kept the good food trucks such as the Viking Truck and Cousin’s Maine Lobster. Also kept the Brewery expo where you can do some additional Christmas shopping at the event.
As for the beer, OC Brewhoho updated and some new breweries for this year. A nice and welcome change.
Resident Brewing: Silent Morning Coffee Stout (One of the best coffee stouts!)
Game Craft Brewing: I’m not that Creative Helle and Dark Archon Stout (Note: Game Craft Brewing opened the same day on December 8th, kudos to be at the two different places)
Ten Mile Brewing: Tsar of the Hill Russian Imperial Stout
Funkwerks: Blueberry Provincial -limited sour release
As we perused the breweries, we couldn’t help noticing all the Christmas beers to get you into the festival spirit. Here were some of my personal favorites:
Abnormal Beer Company: Candy Cane Ice Cream Cake Imperial Milk Stout (Best of the day!) and Pine Bomb IPA with simcoe, cascade, and columbus
Firestone Walker: Bravo BA brown and Winter Wooky
Hanger 24-Pugachev Cobra Russian Imperial Stout
Stereo Brewing: Cherry Garcia Wall of Sound Stout (GABF winner)
Other notable beers to get you into the Christmas spirit
Noble Ale Works: Stocking Stuffer Hazy Pale Ale
Pizza Port: Liquid Mistletoe Belgian Tripel
Unsung: Saint Nick R Doodle-Part snickerdoodle, part cinnamon toast crunch. Ale with lactose, vanilla, and cinnamon – perfect for Christmas morning.
Docent Brewing-Beard Envy Imperial Stout with pecan and coconuts. A collab with OC Brewhaha with Magnum hops and Simpsons malt available at the brewery.
The 80s genre music they kept. Fast Times was definitely not “peaceful” but was an excellent 80s cover band that kept the crowd flowing!
The benevolent side of the brewhoho is made possible through partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County.
Volunteers that helped out in the previous years once again returned to help. Thanks for pouring the 100+ available beers again this year.
Thanks again for a fun time OC Brewhoho! This event always bring out the jovial side in all of us and a reunion with my BFF, the Beer Family of Friends.
