Sunny California weather with blithering heat in the high 90s on Sept 24th, scorched the South-land during the 7th annual OC Brewhaha at Oak Canyon Park. To quench the thirst, over 90 craft breweries on on hand and the smarter ones were set up by the shade. If you haven’t been to Oak Canyon Park, it’s a vast campsite area that’s slightly mountainous with a lake for fishing. Basically, a place you can party as loud as you want and no one will be bothered.
That’s great because the bands for this year included the Spazzmatics (80s Nerd band) and Groove Session. Not sure if it was the beer talking but The Spazzmatics really rocked the event towards the end of the festival with lots of people having a great time dancing by the stage.
There were no map or a list of the beers this year so I will share some of the ones I thought was fantastic. But first, like every year a special beer was made just for the event. This year, the collaboration 9% DIPA called Stable Orbit was made from Alesmith & Bottlelogic. In addition, some of the other breweries would bring their “Special” beers for either the VIPs or had a special session for a pour. Some of the notables included:
Bottle Logic Darkstar November (1pm). Fundamental Observation (2:30pm)
Acoustic Ales Strawberry Ale Kettle Sour ( VIP )
Hoparazzi Fukufizie (VIP and 2pm)
Telegraph Reserve Wit with Apricot
The Bruery Wiki Wiki Tart
Mikkeler Breakfast Stout
Mike Hess My Other Vice Berliner Weiss with Pomegranate
Valiant Alpha Overdrive Quad IPA/ The Bruce Scotch Ale
Backstreet Brewing Mango Hefeweizen
This year, food trucks were replaced by more elegant dining options including Slaters 50/50, 5 Crowns of Corona Del Mar and Haven Gastropub (Recent winner of Best Gastropub by Orange County Register).
Entertainment included the usual giant Jenga, cornhole, but new this year was the Human Size Fuseball.
Like last year, a complimentary shuttle will bus festival goers to the Tustin Metrolink Station. Nice touch for many of us who choose to Uber or Lyft and cannot get phone service in the area.
A great time as always, and this festival seems to get better and bigger. Spotted some newcomers such as Unsung Brewing and Stereo Brewing and more cider selections more than ever. keep an eye out for the Brew Ho Ho and other events in the upcoming weeks from the BrewHaha event organizers.
And if you happen to just read this one line, the below video will sum up the event.
