Tokeru Kobayashi, the name synonymous with devouring large amount of food in a short period of time, was in town this past weekend at Redondo Beach Weeman´s Chronic Tacos for their 5th annual taco challenge. The yearly event, which is cross promoted with their In- house Gringo Bandito´s hot sauce, started 5 years ago in Huntington Beach and has grown every year with the last 2 years at the Redondo location, says Chronic Taco´s CEO Michael Mohammed.
Six competitive eaters entered but non came close to Kobayashi new record of 144 tacos in 10 minutes, shattering his previous record of 130 tacos. He took home the trophy and the $5,000 prize. Patrick Bertoletti (AKA Deep Dish) came in 2nd place with just over 100 tacos and taking home $1,000.
For all of you who wonders like I do, I took a minute to ask Kobayashi a few questions on what he does to win the contests.
Me-¨Do you have any rituals prior to competition?¨
Kobayashi-¨I exercise a lot, I run a lot to stay fit.¨
Me: ¨Do you eat anything before or after the contest?¨
Kobayashi-¨I do not eat anything before the contest and after the contest, I will skip two meals. Also, I will celebrate a lot to celebrate my win tonight!¨
