Ever partied a little too hard over the weekend? Like finding yourself not being able bypass the password protection on the computer? Not sure about you but this past July 4th weekend was no exception for me. Yes, the weekend of red, white, and blue always involves a few drinks here and today my body is telling me to take a break. So how do I repair myself and get on with the weekly routine you ask?
Enter Backyardbowls (BYB). If you have heard of them, chances are you were a UCSB student or you could simply be a vegan, a vegetarian, or a fan who crave the goodness of Açai bowls. If you have never heard of Acai (Pronounced Ah-sci-EE) , you have been missing out. This Brazillian superfood not only tastes great but has many self healing qualities such as detoxify and cleanse the body, increase stamina and energy, and a whole slew of good for you benefits. I love having Açai bowls after a busy weekend and BYB does justice in making their Açai bowls tastes totally awesome! The sweetness satisfies the kid in me while the antioxidants help repair the adult body in me.
BYB was founded in November 2008 by local Santa Barbara residents Pete Heth and Dan Goddard. The concept of having a featured menu strictly on the Acai bowls was a first of its kind in North America during that time. Locals loved the concept and soon locations included Goleta, La Cumbre, and Downtown Santa Barabara. Known for their innovative menu of Acai Bowls, they take pride in providing a quick and healthy meal option served all while minimizing environmental impacts. BYB is a certified green business. Now, Angelenos are lucky to have the goodness of BYB without having to drive all the way out for it!
As for all the ingredients that goes into the bowls, Manager Danielle mentions, ¨We only focus on quality ingredients such as organic, pesticide free, and locally sourced goods from farmers market. We also have lots of options for people who are vegan or gluten free. In addition, granola with low glycemic index that are all made in house compliment all the bowls¨.
Backyardbowls’ menu is pretty straight forward. Açai bowls, Porridge bowls, Smoothies, Coffee, Tea, and the daily made in-house cashew and hemp milk for those that are allergic to regular dairy milk. While here, I found myself getting the Berry Bowl which consisted of Açai, Banana, Strawberry, and apple juice that gets blended as the base inside a soundproof room. Then the toppings get added on with granola, banana, strawberries, blueberry, goji berry, and honey. Taking a spoonful of this reminds me of eating ice cream with lots of fruit toppings. The sweetness of the honey on the fruit with the soft serve like base is a great alternative to having the traditional breakfast or lunch. So if you ever want to get a quick recharge on your body, make sure you make a pit stop and refuel at Backyardbowls!
