How do you like your BBQ? Carolina? Texas? Kansas City or perhaps Memphis style? Whatever your preference is, you will sure find it at the West Coast BBQ on May 9 at the Queen Mary. This year you will find over 60 different teams from all over Southern California competing for the purse of over $10,000 in cash prize. The event is California State Certified as well as KCBS Sanctioned.
Champion and amateur Pitmasters alike have been here days prior to prep their low and slow BBQ. For $2 a tasting on event day, you can get that off the bone goodness. Since I was able to walk the grounds the day before, I was able to see first hand how some of the teams are prepping for the big day on Satuday. Some teams were trimming off fatcaps, while others were already busy smoking in their Weber bullets. All teams were given Farmer John products to serve for the big day.
A short stroll through the harbor, I noticed every team has their own recipe and cooking methods. Non shared their secrets to their award winning recipes but all were all friendly. The public has an opportunity to vote for their favorite BBQ team to take home the People’s Choice award trophy.
For most teams, it’s a family affair. Every mom, aunt, cousin will pitch in to do a share of the work. Lucky for me, I got to see first hand from one of the teams, Outta Gas BBQ . They were kind enough to let me take a few photos of their team while they were preparing for their famous short rib tacos.
As I continue walking down to see the other teams, I was also able to walk around to talk around the other various pitmasters. At Big Mista’s BBQ, Pitmaster Neil Strawder mentioned, “I’m just here to have fun this weekend”. Even though it’s a competition for the best mouth watering BBQ, at least we know it’s a friendly one.
The pitmasters wouldn’t be able to make their great BBQ taste great without the help of gourmet firewood. I noticed a few of the teams carry wood from The Woodshed. Sure you might of always hear of mesquite, pecan, and hickory but do you know they also carry such wood like avocado, grape, and peach? If you want some of that unique flavor in your BBQ, make sure you check them out.
All entrants will have the opportunity to enter the World Famous Queen Mary as part of the admission. There will be live music from artists River Road and Pawnshop Kings. There will also be an area for backyard games and a BBQ merchant market. Children are invited to enjoy the Kids Country featuring inflatables, children’s activities and more fun.
The West Coast BBQ Classic will be taking place from 11am-6pm on May 9 next to the Queen Mary. General admission for adults will be $15 if purchased in advance online and $20 at the door. Child admission (age 4-11) will be $5. A limited number of VIP tickets start at $30 and will have early access (10am-11am). Event parking is $13.
