Los Angeles’ newest sweet addition, Salt and Straw ice creamery arrived from Portland last month, bringing with it a host of tasty, farm-to-cone creations. Salt and Straw was founded by cousins Kim and Tyler Malek in Portland, Oregon and the shop became an immediate success. Only two days ago, Vice President Joe Biden was photographed inside of their shop enjoying one of their ice cream cones. Now, the Maleks are taking Los Angeles by storm with their small batch, hand-made ice creams that seek to highlight the unique flavors of Los Angeles using only the best local, seasonal and organic ingredients.

Earlier this month, Salt and Straw introduced their Early Autumn Harvest Series featuring a host of flavors sourced from Los Angeles producers, all celebrating the arrival of Fall. Harvest flavors include California Peaches with Lemon Crumble, with peaches sourced from Burkart Organic Farms, Cinnamon Apple Doughnuts, with butter and salt doughnuts from Sidecar Doughnuts, Chocolate Almond and Caramel Cheesecake, with almonds grown in Kern County, and a Grand Poppy Sherbert, using a California Poppy liqueur from Greenbar Distillery in Downtown LA.

Flavors change the first Friday of every month and alongside these seasonal flavors, Salt and Straw serves several signature selections as well.

Our favorites from the signature collection included the Santa Ynez Valley Walnut Oil, a subtle ice cream with a rich, creamy texture and the perfect dose of flavor and the Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, a great choice for your sweet tooth craving with caramel ribbons woven throughout, packing the perfect punch of sweetness.

Other great classic options include the Freckled Woodblock Chocolate, made with chocolate from Portland’s first bean-to-bar chocolate maker, using a technique called freckling to suspend the chocolate in an un-tempered state and the Stumptown Coffee and Compartes Love Nuts, made with cold-brewed Sumatran coffee. And “what is a Love Nut?” you ask. A chocolate-dipped, caramel-coated pecan that serves to provide the perfect crunch for the perfect ice cream.

The surprise of the night? The Avocados and Strawberries sherbet – a fantastically balanced, creamy creation with a wholly unique flavor profile.

Swing by their Larchmont Village location and enjoy a tasting flight of some of this season’s favorites or grab a pint or two to go.
