Ready to dive in? The Friday Grand Tasting will feature Pinot Noir from more than 100 producers. Start your journey of tasting the world of Pinot Noir, mingle and meet the winemakers and principals and hear their take on regional terroir. Make sure to take time to nibble on fresh, local and seasonal wine country appetizers from the Bacara culinary team and don’t miss the cheeses from C’est Cheese! A Silent Auction will include large format and rare finds and will benefit the Michael Bonaccorsi Scholarship Fund and the Keith Patterson Memorial Endowment at Cal Poly. •”Taste Around the World” at the International Dinner Friday, 7pm, Miró Restaurant
Just as every region’s Pinot Noir has its own nuances, so does each region have their own cuisine. This “taste around the world” dinner is hosted by chef David Reardon and his Bacara culinary team and promises an incredible internationally focused 5-course meal to wow your senses. Appetizers and wines from the Finger Lakes of NY and Switzerland then on to a first course focused on New Zealand and Australia. Also featuring wines from Chile, Canada, France, Oregon, and California! Then hear what the winemakers think of the pairings and how it compares to “down home cuisine”. All of this, of course, complemented by the exemplary wine service always provided by our team of sommeliers.
• “Hollywood & The Vine” Seminar Saturday, 10am – 2pm, Bacara Salon
Over the past decade, it seems that wine – and Pinot Noir particularly – have had starring roles in the movies. Ten years ago, Sideways was filmed in Santa Barbara County and went on to influence wine preferences around the globe. More recently, the movie Somm captured the angst, emotion and preparation that goes into taking the massively intimidating Master Sommelier Exam. Included in the film are long-time WOPN presenter Fred Dame and local MS candidate Brian McClintic. Sara Schneider from Sunset Magazine will lead panelists on an exploration of just why Pinot Noir has become such a Hollywood starlet. Taste wines along with movie stars and producers. Can you guess the wines? Can the panelists? It’s Sideways vs. Somm.
Lunch prepared by Frank Ostini from Hitching Post II Restaurant? HP2 was the “set” for much of Sideways, putting the restaurant and Frank’s oak-grilled fare on the map. He’ll pull out all the stops for a red-carpet luncheon.
•Pinot Noir by the Sea Grand Tasting Saturday, 3 – 6pm, early admission at 2.30pm
Featuring a different roster of wineries from California and even more wines from international and regional participants, the Grand Tasting continues the World of Pinot Noir tradition of Pinot Noir by the Sea. The Grand Ballroom and Terraces will be the setting for more than 120 producers of this alluring grape. Chef David Reardon and his culinary team will pull out all the stops for tasty pinot inspired appetizers as you taste. C’est Cheese will be there with their incredible cheese tasting and our Silent Auction returns with a new slate of magnums, verticals and special bottlings. You’ll taste some of the world’s most delicious Pinot Noirs and understand why winemakers say Pinot Noir is “all about place”. Enjoy the view of the Pacific from the Terraces as you immerse yourself in the World of Pinot Noir! Opt for early admission for a more leisurely experience and an additional half hour of tasting.
• WOPN Gala Saturday, 7pm, Rotunda & Terrace
There is no more fitting way to close the WOPN festival than a communal gathering of food and wine! The evening begins with a seasonal and fresh plated amuse bouche as the featured winemakers and a team of sommeliers introduce themselves. Now primed for Pinot Noir action, wander the food stations set up by the entire Bacara culinary team, talk to the chefs, mingle with the winemakers, find that secret bottle recommendation from a Somm. Eat, Drink, Enjoy! The Ultimate Wine Dinner. The Gala is a large format bottle event featuring more than 30 winery participants!
